Causes of Diarrhea

Diarrhea can occur in normal healthy adults up to four times a year. It is the second most commonly reported illness in the U.S. Although diarrhea is usually caused by stress, medication, and food, sometimes it is a sign of a larger malaise.

A lack of good hygiene, an intake of improperly cooked food, or consuming unpasteurized milk are all potential causes of diarrhea. When traveling, diarrhea is common in tourists who unwittingly consume contaminated food and water.

Broadly, there are two kinds of diarrhea – short term diarrhea and long-term diarrhea, each with its own set of possible causes.

Short-term diarrhea is usually caused by harmful organisms in the stomach. These include:

  1. Bacteria such as Salmonella, Shigella, E. coli, Campylobacter, etc.
  2. Intestinal parasites like Giardia.
  3. Virus like Rotavirus and Norovirus.
  4. Other causes of short-term diarrhea include alcohol abuse, anxiety, appendicitis, allergy to certain foods, and also damaged intestine linings resulting from radiotherapy.
  5. In addition diarrhea may be caused as a side-effect of certain medicines like laxatives, statins, SSRIs, NSAIDs, chemotherapy, antacids, and antibiotics.

Long-term diarrhea can result from a variety of causes. These include:

  1. Bowel cancer, which causes diarrhea and intestinal bleeding.
  2. Diverticulitis, which results in pockets or bulges developing in intestinal linings.
  3. Inflammation in the pancreas, which may result in diarrhea.
  4. Gluten intolerance, which means your body reacts negatively to gluten intake. This is called celiac disease.
  5. Inflammation of the gut through Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis can also result in diarrhea.
  6. Irritable bowel syndrome is also a cause of long-term diarrhea.
  7. In addition, gastrectomy (done to remove a part of the stomach) can also cause long-term diarrhea.

How to Get Rid of Diarrhea

Stop Diarrhea Fast with Enemas image by Enema Kits AustraliaThere are several ways to get rid of diarrhea:

The first and most obvious way to alleviate symptoms of diarrhea is by regulating the oral intake. There are certain foods that will heal your diarrhea and others that may aggravate it. You may want to consume the foods best for your condition and avoid the foods that are harmful for diarrhea patients.

Prescription antibiotics are used to combat diarrheas caused by bacterial infections. Prescription antibiotics are ineffectual with viral infections and other causes of diarrhea. In addition they may cause side-effects and are also prone to aggravating problems when used incorrectly.

Another approach to rid the body of diarrhea is to rest, relax, and let the diarrhea run its course.

Several kinds of enemas are available for relieving issues with the colon. Since an enema acts directly on the colon, it is extremely effective. One of the enemas used for a variety of gastrointestinal disorders is the yogurt enema.

Enemas have been in use throughout recorded history. The reason may be that they are fast, effective, and proven. There are several types of enemas in use today. These are used for relief from gastrointestinal problems and to enhance health.

Some commonly used enemas to get rid of diarrhea include, coffee enema, acidophilus enema (yogurt enema), Epsom salt enema, lemon juice enema, milk and molasses enema, salt and soda enema, and salt water enema.

Each of these enemas has its own applications. Salt and soda enemas help neutralize acidity. Milk and molasses enemas are good for discharging excess fecal matter. The yogurt enema has multiple benefits, including relief from IBS, constipation, bowel diseases, colon cancer (according to gerson therapy), and hemorrhoids.

Not only does the yogurt enema cleanse the colon gently but it also benefits the flora of the intestines by building up beneficial bacteria in them. Because the bacteria are introduced directly into the colon, the chances of them surviving are far higher than by orally ingesting yogurt.

The beneficial gut bacteria usually deplete due to regular enemas. That is why a regular enema should ideally be followed up with a yogurt enema. Alternatively the regular enema should be substituted by a yogurt enema at regular intervals.

There are more gut microorganisms in our body than body cells. They are an incredibly important part of the delicate body culture. By increasing the healthy bacteria in the gut, the immune system strengthens and the body can deal with toxins better. In addition, undigested proteins and harmful microorganisms can also be dealt with by a good gut microorganism culture.

The yogurt enema by promoting good bacteria also prevents infections and produces essential nutrients like Vitamin B12 and K. The good bacteria help in the body culture in a number of ways.

Yogurt enemas directly implant probiotics in the body. Active-culture yogurts or home-made yogurts are best for this purpose.

A recipe for a yogurt enema follows:

“Mix four tablespoons of probiotic yogurt in two liters of warm filtered water. After stirring administer the enema for at least ten minutes so that the bacteria go deep within the intestine. Some experts recommend doing a plain water enema before the yogurt enema because that makes retention of the second enema easier.”

So there you have it! Now you are prepared to win the war on diarrhea! Remember if your stools start running loose on you and you have an important event scheduled on that day, don’t panic! Eat the right stuff and take an enema. If you need enema supplies, get them here.
